About Appraisals

A written appraisal provides a complete description of the item, including age, materials, maker and physical characteristics condition and workmanship, elements of provenance, and an opinion on the value based on the client’s specific needs (i.e. insurance, tax deduction, sale, etc.). Appraisals are generally for the U.S. market. A written appraisal which meets the required specifications of the Uniform Standard of Professional Appraisal Practice is recognized by insurance companies, the IRS and other legal entities as a valid expression of an item’s worth.

Verbal appraisals include estimated date item was made, and estimated value range along with general information of interest.  Oral appraisals are for owner’s information use only.

Why You Need A Quilt Appraisal

When there is a question about the value of personal property, a professional appraisal is needed. Appraisals are used to establish the value of items for insurance, gifting, sale, donations with tax deductions, and estate settlement purposes. Quilters need appraisals for shipping insurance, exhibiting, gifting, selling, and donating their work.  The most common need for a quilt appraisal is for INSURANCE reasons. Whenever there is loss or damage of a quilt, the insurance company will set the amount they feel that an insured  person is entitled to receive.  Most insurance adjusters are not knowledgeable about the value of quilts today, and will only rely upon an appraisal by an experienced appraiser to substantiate the value of the piece.  Shippers will not accept self-appraisals for claim disputes.

FAIR MARKET VALUE is used for determining a sale price for a quilt, as well as DONATION VALUE when the donated item’s value will be used for tax deduction purposes.
